With growing concern for agriculture and food security in today’s climate, public interest in bees has boomed, especially in the city. Monoculture and the use of harsh pesticides in typical industrial farming has made cities, in contrast, far more hospitable places for bees to thrive. While many city slickers have taken up the practice of rooftop honey beekeeping, the importance and value of the hundreds of species of native bees and other pollinators has been forgotten with catastrophic results in some cases. This workshop is meant to teach the importance of our native pollinators in our agricultural practices and ultimately in the availability of nutritious food. We will have examples of a bumblebee nest box, a bee block, and we will have a little hands-on segment on building simple native bee nests and where and how to set them up. Materials will be somewhat limited so it’ll be first come first served.
